This is the perfect time to join a choir. Whether it is one of mine, or one run near to you, or a franchise choir… It doesn’t matter, it’s the perfect time to start singing if you haven’t done it before.

I always get a bit worried when people enquire about joining a choir in May or June. I understand that the evenings are light and it is the perfect opportunity to get out and about for a bit, but most choirs start with new repertoire in September, ready for a concert or two in July before an August break. Joining a choir in May often means that you feel out of your depth as you try to get your head around a repertoire that everyone else has been working on for 9+ months. I always try to tell people that it will feel as if they can’t keep up, but try not to worry too much. I will often revisit the bones of a song throughout the year as we go.

But if you join in September, the repertoire is new to EVERYONE, and you get to have all the “I’m expected to sing WHAT???” moments with the rest of your section, which is honestly quite a bonding experience… Three months of failing with that pesky C# can be frustrating, but when someone next to you is also failing, it’s great confirmation that it’s not you, it’s the song arranger!

So if you’ve ever fancied having a bit of a go, now is the perfect time to turn up and have a sing! Remember, nobody expects you to be perfect the first time. Or any of the subsequent times, if we’re honest… Just raising your voice with a whole lot of other people is a wonderful and healing thing. Why not give it a try?
